Overview

TASUKI is conducted by Fishpass, Focus Systems, and Leave a Nest with middle and high school students. Participants use environmental DNA to analyze aquatic biodiversity from water samples, interpret data, and develop their own scientific hypotheses and discoveries.

Technology strengths

Environmental DNA estimates species around a site by analyzing DNA collected from water. With academic partners at Fukui Prefectural University and the Ryukoku University Center for Biodiversity Science, the program evaluates biodiversity in lakes and rivers and can also be applied to marine areas.

Use case

Students from Tachikawa and Musashi high schools evaluated biodiversity in the Tama River system, while students from Takashima and Yawata Technical high schools conducted a similar assessment in Lake Biwa.
