Floating Wave Power Generation to Expand Renewable Energy Sites

Overview

As renewable energy deployment advances toward carbon neutrality by 2050, land suitable for solar and wind power is becoming scarce. This project develops floating wave power generation to use the vast energy of the ocean, which covers roughly 70 percent of Earth.

Technology strengths

Wave energy is less affected by weather and day-night cycles and can support a stable supply of clean energy. Because the floating system requires no structure on the seabed, it can be installed regardless of water depth and can help improve energy self-sufficiency and reduce geopolitical risks related to fossil fuels.

Hakata Fishing Port, Fukuoka City

Use case

With support from Fukuoka City and its agriculture, forestry, and fisheries bureau, a wave power facility was demonstrated at Hakata Fishing Port after permits and coordination with fisheries and the Japan Coast Guard were completed.

Additional examples

Demonstrations at Toyama Shinko and Osaka Nanko confirmed that the system can be installed and removed without modifying coastal structures, follow tidal changes, and continue stable generation at night and during severe weather.
